Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I am Gloria Mendoza, your new state representative serving the amazing 14th Legislative District. I was sworn in on Monday, Jan. 13, the first day of the scheduled 105-day legislative session in Olympia. On Wednesday, Jan. 15, I was honored to deliver the Republican Perspective speech following Gov. Bob Ferguson’s Inaugural Address. You can watch the Republican Perspective speech here in English and Spanish.

My first email update
This is my first legislative email update to you as your new state lawmaker. Communication with the citizens I serve is a vital part of my job. I want to keep you informed to the important activities and bills at the state Capitol that could affect our folks back home. I hope you find these email updates helpful and informative. However, I also know that our inboxes become very full with unsolicited emails. I won’t be filling your inbox, because I wish to be respectful. If for any reason you wish not to receive my emails, scroll down to the end of this newsletter and there’s a link that allows you to unsubscribe. I hope you stay and share this update with your friends and neighbors.
New website
I invite you to browse through my new website: gloriamendoza.houserepublicans.wa.gov. Here you can read my news releases, see my bills, and there’s an area where people can sign up for my email updates.
There’s also more about my background on my “About Gloria” page. I am a Mexican immigrant who grew up in Grandview, worked the fields when I was younger, started my own successful business and served on the Grandview City Council and as Grandview’s mayor. I am blessed and honored to now serve as your state representative and to be your voice in Olympia.

Committee assignments
As I noted in my first press release on opening day, I care deeply about our communities and the issues that matter to all of us — such as reducing the high cost of living, working for tax relief, supporting economic development and jobs, securing a quality education for our children, and protecting individual and constitutional rights. Much of the work for these goals is accomplished, not only through bills, but within legislative committees, working side-by-side with Republicans and Democrats alike.
I have been chosen to serve on three committees:
- Environment and Energy – This committee considers issues relating to statewide environmental policy, energy, state parks and recreation, air quality and more.
- Postsecondary Education and Workforce – This committee considers issues relating to postsecondary education, technical training, apprenticeships, removing barriers to employment, workforce development and more. As the owner of a vocational and technical school, I hope to use my experience to move policy that will increase education opportunities and grow more jobs in our state.
- Transportation – I was honored to be named assistant ranking member of this committee, which considers all issues related to statewide transportation needs. This is also one of the Legislature’s three budget committees and creates a budget plan to pay for roads, highways, bridges, airports, rail, the Washington State Patrol and more.

Media
I was honored to be featured this week in the Washington State Standard’s article, “What it’s like as a freshman state lawmaker in Olympia.”
Visitors welcome!
It’s the “People’s House” and you are welcome to visit. I enjoy meeting with citizens from the 14th District. If you are planning to visit Olympia, please call my office. We can help with visitor information and my legislative assistant, Annalise Hemingway, would be glad to set up a meeting with you. You will find all of my contact information below.
More to come. . .
There are many important issues and bills we are discussing and considering in committees and on the House floor. This week, public hearings are being held on gun rights, litter control, financial literacy, parents rights and more. You can learn more about these and other hearings on this website: The Week Ahead. This site is updated every Friday with the coming week’s public hearings.
In my next email update, I will get into more of the issues and bills we are debating this session. Please contact my office with any questions, comments or suggestions about legislation and state government. It is truly an honor to serve and represent you!
Sincerely,

Gloria Mendoza
